Player-Safe Session Report
Last time, the party stopped somewhere along the Ditchway — the road connecting Lankshorn and Dreg — at a small track heading off the main road and towards Droomen Knoll. Here, they could already hear a dissonant mix of windpipes and drums from the direction of the old fairy keep, carried towards them by the wind.
They decided to head straight for the strange sounds, approaching the knoll with their cart and two donkeys. What they saw was an old, rectangular ruin, standing on a woody mound, the path they were on leading up the hill and through an intact archway in the old wall. They decided to hitch their cart and donkeys to a nearby tree, and Edmund took it upon himself to sneak up to the wall. Touching it, he realised that it was wintery cold — even though it was only the end of Symswald.
Peeking around the wall and through the archway, into the courtyard of the old keep, he saw four disgusting-looking Breggle with their flesh peeling off and maggots crawling through their patchy fur: Crookhorns. They were dancing in ecstasy around a fire, banging drums.
He used his Crystal Resonance spell to make a “crystallograph” of the scene. Deciding that this would be enough to get the 200GP reward, the party decided to head back to Lankshorn.
At the Hornstoat’s Rest, they had the good fortune to meet Marge and Rodger, the two policemen who had tasked them with this quest. Sadly, they would have to wait until Edmund’s spell recharged the next day to replay the scene from the crystal, and even though the party told them that they had the evidence they were looking for, Rodger still insisted that the reports were probably nonsense. Still, they agreed to meet at the Inn the next morning.
Rodger’s behaviour made the party suspicious, and Bon decided to follow Rodger home. But with a Stalking skill target of 6, it didn’t take long for Rodger to notice Bon behind him, and Bon had to abandon the hunt.
During that night at the Inn, a shadowy figure broke into Edmund’s room, and almost stole the crystal, but Edmund managed to notice them at the right time and the figure hurried outside. Though when Bon gave chase, they weren’t anywhere to be found. From then on, the party took turns keeping watch.
The next morning, they showed Marge and Rodger the recording from the crystal, and when it became clear that the evidence was irrefutable, Rodger revealed himself to be infected by the same disease that had infected the Crookhorns, and he started attacking the party.
They managed to kill him, but both Henrick and Bon were infected by weird worms that crawled under their skin during the fight. Henrick cast a healing spell to get rid of them, but for Bon, the party headed to the church, interrupting that Sunning’s mass. Father Eggwin Dobey healed Bon, but the congregation was clearly disturbed by the whole scene.
DM Notes
If you are a player in this campaign, you probably want to stop here!
Since I’ve fallen behind on these reports, it’s a bit hard to actually attribute certain learnings to sessions from over two months ago. DM notes will resume once I’m caught up.
