Player-Safe Session Report

If you are a player in this campaign, don’t click on (or scroll to and read) the footnotes!

The session began with the group camping near the road towards Lankshorn, woken in the night by a wandering elf who told them that they were being followed by a Drune. Rowan told them to hide behind “his” statue, and shortly afterwards, a Drune Cottager came out of the woods, looking for the elf.

Henrick managed to convince the Drune that the elf had come through there, but was headed to High-Ankle. So the elf was safe, and told the party that the Drune thought that they were one of the Cold Prince’s spies that were scouring Dolmenwood, looking for a way to bring him back. They also told them that they came from Lord Mai-Fleur’s domain, which led to a lot of questioning by Rowan, most of which the elf — who introduced themselves as “Sun’s-Turning-Tide” — couldn’t really answer. They could tell them a lot about the Drune though.

As a thanks for protecting them, Sun’s-Turning-Tide gave them 4 pieces of gold, told Rowan what the Wolfsbane he was carrying could be used for (warding off werewolves), and offered to identify what the Gobble-drop Rowan had found could do. If Rowan gave Sun’s-Turning-Tide one, they would take it, and then report back what had happened. Rowan took them up on their offer, and Sun’s-Turning-Tide promised that they would find the party once they had taken the Gobble-drop.

After that, they took off into the wilds again.

In the morning, Edmund II managed to remember his Floating Disk spell, despite not getting a good night’s sleep, and the party spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon moving the statue to Lankshorn.

There, Father Eggwin Dobey informed them that it was indeed not worth 4000GP, as the curate Odell had told them, but 5000GP, which one of the curates promptly delivered in the form of a wheelbarrow full of gold coins. 1

They almost immediately developed delusions of grandeur, thinking about retiring from their life of adventure, but they’re Germans after all, so they ended up buying only the most essential things and putting the rest of the money into bank accounts that don’t pay any interest.

Henrick reached level 2, joining the Order of St Sedge.

Among the things they bought were two mules (named Brumhilda and Daunber) and a cart, giving them what amounts to an infinite inventory glitch. They did this in preparation for tackling the crookhorn problem on Droomen Knoll.

Overall, they spent a week in Lankshorn so that Edmund II could learn a new spell. Rowan used this time to train his crow — now named Krimhild — and drink with both Joermy the Bladesmith and Jessop the local carpenter.

Then, on the morning of Eggfast, the 20th of Symswald, the party set out for the hex to the north-east of Lankshorn.

Here, they saw a lot of red worms in the ground, and started hearing a dissonant mix of windpipes and drums as they approached Droomen Knoll… 2

DM Notes

If you are a player in this campaign, you probably want to stop here!

What Worked Well

  • Whereas last session was all about logistics, this one was all about bookkeeping. I see nothing wrong with that, as that’s a big part of the resource-based play of OSE/Dolmenwood to me. And talking to the players after the session, they seemed to agree that it felt like they made a lot of progress this session, even though not much happened narrative-wise.

What Could’ve Gone Better

  • Not the most exciting session (again), but all good. We’re well-prepared to head into Pipes on Droomen Knoll.
  • I’ve been planning on “making time count” for when we finish Droomen Knoll pretty much from the beginning. I just didn’t expect it to take so long, ironically. I hope I’ll find ways to make that shift clear once it becomes relevant.

Footnotes

Footnotes
  1. After 6 sessions of essentially no money and no XP being awarded, it felt wrong and great at the same time to suddenly award so much and many all at once. But I felt they had worked very hard for it and did such a good job that there shouldn’t be any further complications to this. The book also makes it sound like yes, there’s simply a lot of treasure here, so why not award it? ↩

  2. So at this point, 7 sessions in, we’ll finally tackle the introductory adventure, but with everyone already pretty well-versed in Dolmenwood rules and lore. I think that’s neat! ↩
